How we collect, organize, and analyze high-end, classic, and enthusiast car market data

Market Coverage

Hypercars tracks 4,000,000+ vehicle listings across 50+ marketplaces, auctions and forums, plus thousands of dealers, adding 25,000+ new listings a day. Coverage includes auctions and fixed-price listings from Bring a Trailer, Cars & Bids, eBay Motors, RM Sotheby's, Mecum, PCarMarket, Collecting Cars, and enthusiast forums such as Rennlist. Vehicle details such as mileage, transmission, color, and VIN are included where available.

Vehicle Identification

Listings are organized consistently by make, model, and variant across marketplaces. When a listing cannot be identified clearly from the information provided, it receives additional review rather than being forced into a broader vehicle group.

Valuations

Valuations reflect relevant completed sales and observable vehicle attributes such as year, variant, mileage, and transmission when those details are available. Estimates evolve as additional market outcomes are recorded.

Title Brands

Market prices, ranges, comparables, and trends leave out cars with a salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon, bonded, or other branded title, because a title brand changes what a car sells for. Market-wide sales counts and dollar volume still include them (a sale count shown beside a price is the number of sales behind that price), and a car with a branded title is valued against cars with the same kind of title.

Appreciation Tracking

We compare recent market behavior with prior periods to identify models that appear to be strengthening or weakening. These trends describe observed market activity rather than guaranteeing future performance.

Listing Locations

Listings are placed at the city or postal-code level from the location the seller gives. Places come from U.S. Census Bureau gazetteer files, GeoNames (adapted, under CC BY 4.0), and a geocoding service for places those sources don't cover.

Fear & Greed Index

The Hypercars Fear & Greed Index compares average daily sold volume, average daily median bids per ended auction, and observed auction sell-through over seven days with the preceding 90 days. The three factors have equal weight. Sell-through uses sold and unsold auctions excluding eBay; the other factors retain eligible eBay records. The index describes market activity, not a price forecast or a literal measurement of emotion.
