Cadillac Eldorado 10th Gen

Introduced for 1979, the 10th generation Eldorado was a significant part of GM's corporate downsizing program. It was smaller and over 900 pounds lighter than its predecessor, yet it retained a spacious interior and classic Cadillac styling cues. Built on the new E-body platform shared with the Oldsmobile Toronado and Buick Riviera, it was notable for its front-wheel drive layout and, for the first time on an Eldorado, four-wheel independent suspension which improved its ride and handling.

The Eldorado's reputation is heavily tied to its powertrains. The 1981 model's V8-6-4 engine with variable displacement was unreliable and often disconnected by owners. Worse still was the HT4100 V8 introduced in 1982, which was underpowered and prone to catastrophic failure. Today, collectors often seek out the 1979-1980 models with the more durable Oldsmobile-sourced 350 V8 or the optional 368-cubic-inch Cadillac V8.

The market for these Eldorados is quite accessible, with an average sale price around $14,000. Top dollar is paid for immaculate, low-mileage Biarritz models, particularly those with the sought-after stainless-steel roof and better engines from 1979-1980. Cars with the problematic HT4100 sell for a significant discount unless they are exceptionally low-mileage survivor cars.

Prices range from a few thousand dollars for project cars to over $55,000 for exceptional, low-mileage examples.
