This drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. This particular M400 was the subject of a retrospective feature in Issue 297 of Evo magazine (May 2022), which John Barker was reacquainted with the model, and took it to meet Lee Noble, where it was also signed. It was acquired by the seller a year ago, and has seven registered keepers in total.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES This M400 is finished in silver over its sculpted bodywork, with covered headlight clusters, black wing mirror casings, and with a large rear wing. It rides on 18-inch split-rim alloy wheels finished in grey, housing black brake callipers, and wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres. The car is equipped with Protech 2-way adjustable dampers, and also features Alunox stainless-steel headers with a Roush stainless-steel and ceramic-coated exhaust.
Its cabin includes lightweight Sparco bucket seats upholstered in black fabric, and there are both standard seat belts as well as four-point Willans harnesses. The steering wheel has Alcantara, leather and gloss carbon-fibre trim, and there is a solid metal gear knob and handbrake grip. Equipment includes push-button start, air conditioning, door pockets, Infinity speakers, and manual winding windows.
The centre console was signed by Lee Noble during an Evo magazine feature. The appropriate registration ‘M40 OGO’ is included in the sale. Accompanying the car are various maintenance invoices as shown, the Noble leather book case, V5C, and a copy of Evo magazine featuring this M400.
CONDITION The paintwork is reported to be in generally good condition, with some stone chips around the front section and black grilles, heavier chipping to the underside of the front lip, and also to the wing mirror casings. There is light ‘road rash’ within the wheel arches, and some chips and marks on the black rear diffuser below the exhaust pipes. Inside, the black fabric upholstery is in very good order, while there is some light wear to the floor mats / pedal areas, as well as to the gear shift gaiter and door cards.
The seller is not aware of any mechanical or electrical faults. The most recent MOT test was on 17 June 2022 at 39,699 miles, which resulted in a second-time pass with no advisories after a number of defects were rectified. SERVICE HISTORY Its last maintenance was a fluids and filters service in January 2023.
In June 2022, at approximately 39,750 miles, DTB Motorsport carried out a 6,000-mile interval service, and also fitted a new nearside front top ball joint, anti-roll bar drop link boots, oil cooler pipes, turbocharger water pipes and clips, repairs to a rear light cluster, and installation of the Protech dampers. DTB Motorsport also serviced the car in May 2020 at 36,541 miles. This included installation of the M15 specification engine built by Roush, fitment of the new Alunox exhaust manifolds, and a full service.
New manifold-to-turbocharger and manifold-to-head gaskets were fitted, along with a new AP clutch, clutch slave cylinder, front and rear turbocharger oil feed lines, nearside rear wheel bearing, and heat wrap for the battery. The air-conditioning was also re-gassed. During the seller’s ownership, the main and footwell floors have been replaced, and the chassis has also been treated.
An upgraded ProAlloy radiator and tunnel cooling pipes have been installed. SUMMARY This Noble M400 is an especially rewarding example of the modern British lightweight hero, boasting a more powerful Roush-built engine intended for the M15 model, and benefiting from significant maintenance work in recent years including new manifold gaskets, a new clutch, and uprated Protech dampers. A well-known car in the owner’s community, thanks in no small part to its starring role in a recent Evo magazine feature, this M400 would be a great addition to any keen driver’s garage.
