Launched on April Fool's Day 1970, the AMC Gremlin was an audacious attempt to fight the rising tide of imported compacts. Built on a shortened Hornet platform with a distinctive Kammback tail, its design was polarizing from day one. Power came from a standard 199ci inline-6, with larger 6-cylinder engines and eventually a 304ci V8 available, which transformed the car's character.
Today, collectors appreciate the Gremlin for its quirky 1970s style and underdog status. It's an accessible classic that doesn't take itself too seriously, with strong parts availability for its powertrain. The V8-powered models and cars equipped with the popular Gremlin X package are the most sought-after, offering more performance and visual appeal than the base models.
Buying Tips
- Rust is the primary concern, so thoroughly inspect the rear quarter panels, floor pans, and subframe rails.
- The standard inline-6 is durable, but the optional 304 V8 provides a significant performance boost and is much more desirable to collectors.
- Interior components, especially the dashboard and seat upholstery, are prone to sun damage and cracking. Sourcing correct replacements can be a challenge.
- Verify the authenticity of special option packages like the Gremlin X, as they add significant value and are sometimes cloned.
