BMW E34 5 Series

The E34 5 Series, produced from 1988 to 1996, is often seen as a high point for BMW's analog era. It combined the classic shark-nose styling of its predecessors with a modern chassis, exceptional build quality, and a new level of refinement. The model range was extensive, starting with the reliable M20 and M50 inline-6 engines in the 525i, the introduction of V8 power in the 530i and 540i, and even an all-wheel-drive 525iX variant.

Collectors appreciate the E34 for its balanced handling, durable interiors, and classic four-headlight design. The pinnacle of the lineup, the E34 M5, is especially desirable. It was the last hand-assembled M car and featured a high-revving S38 inline-6, with displacement growing from 3.6 to 3.8 liters in European models. The M5 Touring is a true holy grail, with fewer than 900 built.

The market for the E34 is very diverse, with an average sale price around $14,750. You can still find running and driving 525i sedans for under $10,000, while pristine, low-mileage 540i/6 models command strong prices. Exceptional E34 M5 examples consistently sell for over $50,000, with the rarest examples, like the 1995 US-spec cars, exceeding $100,000.
