GMC's "Blue Chip" series, sold from 1955 to 1959, was the brand's version of the Chevrolet Task Force trucks. They introduced a modern, car-like design with a wraparound windshield, hooded headlights, and an available V8 engine sourced from Pontiac. These trucks were a major step up in both style and comfort from their predecessors, featuring a 12-volt electrical system and more driver-focused amenities.

Collectors are drawn to the Blue Chip's styling, which many feel is more deluxe than its Chevy counterpart. The unique grille designs and optional Pontiac V8s set them apart. The rare "Suburban Carrier" pickup with its fiberglass "sweep-side" bed is particularly desirable. These trucks offer a great combination of classic 1950s looks and the capability to be driven and enjoyed regularly.

Buying Tips

  • Rust is the biggest concern. Thoroughly check cab corners, floor pans, step wells, and the bottom of the front fenders.
  • Many trucks have had engine swaps. An original, numbers-matching Pontiac-derived V8 is a rare find and adds value for purists.
  • On "sweep-side" models, inspect the fiberglass bed sides for cracks, waviness, and poor repairs, as they are difficult to restore correctly.
  • Examine the electrical system. While factory 12-volt, many have been rewired. Look for clean, modern wiring harnesses and avoid signs of amateur work.
  • Verify the chassis and cab VIN plates. Ensure they match and haven't been altered, especially on trucks with extensive modifications.
