Honda CB450 & CL450

Honda's first large-displacement motorcycle, the CB450, debuted in 1965 as a direct challenge to the dominant British parallel-twins. Its 444cc DOHC engine was technically advanced for its time, featuring torsion bar valve springs instead of conventional coils. Known as the "Black Bomber," the original K0 model established Honda as a serious contender in the global market. The lineup soon expanded to include the CL450 Scrambler, which offered high-mount exhaust pipes and off-road styling cues.

Collectors prize the CB450 for its historical significance and engineering. The early K0 models are the most desirable, but later K-series bikes with 5-speed transmissions and improved styling are also popular for riders. The CL450 Scrambler has a strong following due to the enduring popularity of the scrambler aesthetic. Compared to their British rivals, these Hondas offer a similar vintage experience with superior reliability and easier parts sourcing, making them an excellent entry into classic motorcycling.

The market for the CB/CL450 is well-established and accessible. With an average price around $5,500, good-quality rider bikes are plentiful and affordable. The wide price range reflects the difference between non-running projects and perfectly restored, early-production "Black Bomber" examples.
