It's the go-anywhere workhorse that became an icon during the first Gulf War, designed for battlefield utility, not civilian comfort. Its immense capability and rugged looks eventually spawned the civilian Hummer H1.
Collectors prize the HMMWV for its authentic military provenance. These aren't civilian lookalikes; they are actual government surplus vehicles that have served in the armed forces. - Verify the title status before you buy. Many are sold with just a bill of sale or an SF-97 form, and registering them for on-road use can be difficult or impossible in some states.
- Inspect the frame and undercarriage meticulously for cracks, especially around suspension mounts. Also, check the geared hubs for fluid leaks, as repairs are expensive.
- The 6.2L and 6.5L diesel engines have different reputations. The later 6.5L is generally preferred, but all are susceptible to overheating, so check the cooling system's condition.
- Assess the quality of any modifications. Many HMMWVs have aftermarket wiring for lights and accessories, which is often a source of electrical problems.
Prices for ex-military HMMWVs range from $7,850 for rough projects to $125,000 for exceptionally restored or modified examples.
