- Frame rust is the number one issue. Thoroughly inspect the frame rails, especially near the rear shackle mounts and the torque box sections under the doors.
- The 4.0L inline-6, introduced in 1991, is the most desirable engine for its power and reliability. Earlier 4.2L models can have complex carburetors, while the 2.5L 4-cylinder is considered underpowered.
- Check for leaks. The rear main seal on the engine is a common failure point, as are seals on the transfer case and axles. Soft tops and door seals almost always leak water.
- Many YJs are heavily modified. Favor stock examples, as poorly installed lift kits and amateur wiring can cause major headaches. Factory half-doors are a desirable option.
- Be wary of "Jurassic Park" clones. Many Sahara models are painted to replicate the movie vehicle; their value is far less than a genuine, low-mileage 1992 Sahara in original condition.
