The W202 was the first Mercedes-Benz officially badged as the C-Class, replacing the legendary 190E (W201) in 1993. It carried over its predecessor's reputation for solid engineering and build quality, but with more modern styling and a wider range of engines. The lineup included everything from the frugal C220 Diesel to the smooth, inline-6 C280. It was a sales success and cemented the C-Class as a core model for the brand.
Collector interest is almost exclusively focused on the high-performance AMG variants. The C36 AMG, launched in 1995, was the first car jointly developed after AMG's merger with Mercedes-Benz. It was later succeeded by the V8-powered C43 AMG, which offered even more performance. These models are sought after for their blend of 90s AMG character, usability, and relatively low production numbers.
The market for the W202 is sharply divided. Standard C230 and C280 models are plentiful and very affordable, often trading for under $10,000. These make great entry-level modern classics or daily drivers. The C36 and C43 AMG models, however, occupy a different tier. With an average sale price of just $7,522 across 76 sales, the data shows the market is dominated by non-AMG examples, but top-tier C43s have sold for as much as $34,000.
Buying Tips
- Inspect thoroughly for rust, especially on the front fender arches, jacking points, and around the trunk lock.
- On 1994-1996 models, check the engine wiring harness. The biodegradable insulation is known to crack and disintegrate, causing expensive electrical problems.
- The 722.6 5-speed automatic transmission can leak fluid from its 13-pin electrical connector. If left untreated, the fluid can wick up the harness into the transmission control module.
- Test all interior electronics. Failed LCD pixels in the instrument cluster, faulty climate control units, and failing window regulators are common issues.
- For AMG models, demand a complete service history. Brakes, suspension components, and engine-specific parts are significantly more expensive than on standard models.
