The MG MGC was a short-lived, high-performance variant of the MGB, produced from 1967 to 1969. To accommodate the heavy 2.9L C-series inline-6 engine borrowed from the Austin-Healey 3000, engineers completely redesigned the front of the car. They replaced the standard MGB coil springs with a torsion bar suspension and added a prominent bulge to the hood.

With just over 9,000 roadsters and GTs built, the MGC's rarity is a key part of its appeal. Collectors appreciate its character as a powerful grand tourer, offering a distinct alternative to the 4-cylinder MGB. While contemporary reviews criticized its heavy steering and tendency to understeer, modern tires and suspension tuning can significantly improve its handling dynamics, making it a capable and comfortable cruiser.

Buying Tips

  • Check for rust around the unique torsion bar mounts and front chassis members, as these are structural and specific to the MGC.
  • The C-series inline-6 is durable but expensive to rebuild. Verify it has good oil pressure (50-60 psi when warm) and listen for timing chain or bottom-end noise.
  • Confirm the car is a genuine MGC. The VIN should start with GCN1 (Roadster) or GCD1 (GT), and it must have the correct torsion bar front suspension, not a conversion.
  • The manual transmission with optional overdrive is the most desirable configuration. The Borg-Warner 35 automatic is less engaging and less valuable.
