- The PCV system is a known weak point. A clogged system pressurizes the crankcase, blowing out oil seals. Check for smoke from the dipstick tube.
- The timing belt on the 5-cylinder engine is critical. It's an interference design, so a failure means catastrophic damage. The service interval is every 70,000 miles or 7 years; budget for it if there's no proof it was done.
- ABS and TRACS lights often point to a failed ABS control module, a very common issue caused by cracked solder joints. Rebuilt modules are widely available.
