The Volvo Amazon, or 120 series, debuted in 1956, but the 122S model arrived in 1958 with more power. It featured the twin-carburetor B16B engine, which was later upgraded to the legendary B18D. The 122S blended Volvo's focus on safety and durability with genuinely enjoyable performance, helping to establish the brand's reputation for building cars that were both sensible and fun to drive.
Collectors appreciate the 122S for its simple, robust mechanicals and classic 1960s design. These cars are easy to work on, parts are readily available, and they are comfortable enough for regular use or long-distance touring. Models from 1962 onwards with the 90 hp B18 engine and front disc brakes are often preferred for their improved performance and stopping power.
Buying Tips
- Rust is the biggest enemy. Check the floors, sills, inner and outer wheel arches, and the seams around the front and rear windscreens.
- The B18 engine is tough, but watch for blue smoke on startup, indicating worn valve guides. Ensure the twin SU carburetors are balanced for a smooth idle and acceleration.
- Check for play in the steering box and wear in front suspension components like kingpins (pre-1962), ball joints, and control arm bushings. A sloppy front end is common but correctable.
- Interior trim and chrome can be surprisingly hard to find and expensive. Inspect the dashboard for cracks and ensure all exterior brightwork is present and in good condition.
