The Cadillac Cimarron was born from GM's reaction to small European luxury sedans in the early 1980s. To compete, the brand rushed a rebadged Chevrolet Cavalier to market. Based on the J-body platform, the Cimarron received a plusher interior and revised suspension tuning, but it couldn't hide its economy car origins. Early models with the 88-horsepower 4-cylinder engine did little to convince buyers they were driving a true Cadillac.
Today, the Cimarron is a fascinating piece of automotive history, often remembered as a symbol of GM's missteps. Its appeal isn't in performance or prestige but in its story and rarity. So few were sold and even fewer were preserved, making a clean, low-mileage Cimarron a surprising find. It's an inexpensive ticket into the classic car hobby for collectors who appreciate oddities and historical footnotes.
The market for the Cimarron is small, and values reflect its controversial status. The average sale price sits around $5,400, proving it's one of the most accessible classic Cadillacs available. The best survivor-quality cars trade for under $8,000, making it a car you buy for its unique history, not as a financial investment.
Buying Tips
- Check for rust on the rocker panels, around the wheel wells, and in the floor pans, as these were common weak points on all J-body cars.
- The Cimarron-specific leather seats are prone to cracking and splitting, and the headliners often sag. Sourcing original-spec interior parts is very difficult.
- Powertrains, whether the 2.0L 4-cylinder or the later 2.8L V6, are simple and share parts with countless other GM cars, making them cheap to fix.
- Verify that all the Cadillac trim, badges, and alloy wheels are present. These specific parts are what separate it from a Cavalier and are hard to find today.
Prices range from around $2,300 for cars needing work to $7,900 for the best preserved examples.
