Chevrolet Vega

The Chevrolet Vega was GM's ambitious 1970s subcompact, designed to compete with popular imports. Launched in 1971 to initial praise for its styling and handling, it won Motor Trend's Car of the Year award. It offered several body styles, including a popular Kammback wagon and a Panel Express van, all built on the H-body platform shared with the Pontiac Astre and later the Chevrolet Monza.

Despite a promising start, the Vega is infamous for its significant engineering flaws. The aluminum-block 2.3L engine was prone to severe overheating and oil consumption, while its body suffered from catastrophic rust issues, sometimes within just a few years. These problems quickly soured its reputation and cemented its place as a symbol of the Malaise Era's quality control struggles. Today, its notoriety and low survival rate make it a unique collectible.

Collectors are drawn to the Vega for its historical significance and classic 70s design. Well-preserved, original cars are incredibly rare and command a premium, especially early models with chrome bumpers. Many surviving Vegas have received V8 engine swaps, a popular modification that resolves the original engine's faults. The market is small, with an average sale price around $15,000, but exceptional examples can fetch much more.
