The Chevrolet Volt was General Motors' ambitious entry into electrification, launching for the 2011 model year. It's a plug-in hybrid, but one with a unique twist: the gasoline engine primarily acts as a generator to power the electric motor once the battery is depleted. This 'Voltec' system provided about 35-38 miles of all-electric range in the first generation (2011-2015), which increased to an impressive 53 miles for the second generation (2016-2019).

The Volt isn't a traditional collectible, but it is a historically significant car. It represents a major automaker's first serious attempt to solve range anxiety and bridge the gap between internal combustion and full-electric vehicles. Its complexity and early-adopter technology make it more of a technological artifact than a blue-chip investment. For this reason, the market is thin, with values defined by usability and condition rather than collectibility.

With an average sale price under $3,500, the Volt has fully depreciated into cheap used car territory. The low values reflect the car's age and the potential for very expensive repairs, particularly related to its high-voltage battery. It's a bargain for a commuter car, but buyers see it as a high-risk appliance, not a future classic.
