The Chrysler Conquest, sold from 1984 to 1989, was a captive import based on the Mitsubishi Starion. It's a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe featuring a turbocharged 2.6L inline-4 engine. The most desirable models are the post-1986 TSi variants, which gained an intercooler, a horsepower bump, and aggressive "widebody" fender flares, cementing the car's 1980s aesthetic.
Collectors appreciate the Conquest for its distinctive Japanese styling and engaging driving dynamics. It offers a more unique alternative to mainstream 80s sports cars like the Nissan 300ZX and Toyota Supra. Its pop-up headlights and angular design make it an icon of its era, and finding well-preserved examples is becoming increasingly difficult.
The market for the Conquest is growing, though it remains more accessible than its contemporaries. The average sale price hovers around $16,000, but exceptional, low-mileage TSi examples have sold for as much as $35,000. These top-tier sales show a strong demand for the best cars, suggesting the market will continue to mature.
Buying Tips
Check for rust thoroughly, especially in the rocker panels, under the rear hatch, and around the wheel arches.
The 2.6L G54B engine can have issues with head cracking and balance shafts. Look for evidence of milky oil and listen for engine vibrations.
Test all electronics, as the 80s-era power windows, digital dash displays, and automatic seatbelts are common failure points.
Widebody TSi models (1986-1989) are more desirable due to their intercooled engines and better looks, making them a smarter long-term purchase.
Inspect the complex network of vacuum hoses for cracks and leaks, as they are a frequent source of running issues.
Prices range from $3,250 for project cars to $35,000 for exceptional, low-mileage examples.
