The Citroen CX, launched in 1974 as the successor to the iconic DS, carried the brand's reputation for innovation forward. Penned by designer Robert Opron, its name reflects its aerodynamic efficiency, with CX being the French term for drag coefficient. It featured a hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension, providing an unmatched ride quality that became a Citroen hallmark.
Collectors are drawn to the CX for its avant-garde styling and unique driving experience. The single-spoke steering wheel, futuristic dashboard with a rotating drum speedometer, and DIRAVI self-centering steering create an experience unlike any other car. As the last car developed independently by Citroen before the Peugeot takeover, it represents a special chapter in the brand's history. Top-tier models like the GTI Turbo and the long-wheelbase Prestige are the most desirable variants.
Buying Tips
- Rust is the primary concern. Thoroughly inspect the sills, floor pans, subframes, and around the front and rear glass, as repairs can be extensive and costly.
- The hydropneumatic suspension is central to the car. Ensure it rises to the correct height promptly after startup and check for any green LHM fluid leaks from the spheres, pump, or high-pressure lines.
- Test all electronics. French cars of the era can have finicky wiring, so check the unique gauges, power windows, and central locking system.
- The DIRAVI self-centering steering should feel smooth and consistent. Any notchiness or failure to return to center indicates a need for expensive repairs.
- Engine-wise, the fuel-injected and turbo models are the most complex. Look for signs of head gasket failure on turbo cars, evidenced by coolant and oil mixing.
