The Dodge Ram Van, or B-series, had an impressively long run from 1971 to 2003, serving as a dependable platform for everything from contractors to camper conversions. It was built on a durable unibody chassis and shared powertrains with Dodge's D-series trucks, including the reliable 318 and 360 V8 engines. Its simple, rugged nature made it a fixture on American roads for over 3 decades.
Today, collectors appreciate the Ram Van for its versatility and nostalgic appeal. It's a popular choice for custom "van life" builds, period-correct 1970s customs with bubble windows, and preserved factory camper conversions. Their mechanical simplicity makes them approachable for DIY enthusiasts, and parts availability is still quite good thanks to the shared truck platform.
The market for these vans is wide. While project-quality examples can be found for very little, the average sale price sits around $10,616. This reflects a growing interest in clean, low-mileage survivors and well-executed camper conversions, which can bring up to $40,000. It's a market where condition and specific configuration, like a factory pop-top or a high-end conversion, dictate value.
Buying Tips
- Rust is the biggest enemy of these unibody vans. Thoroughly inspect the rocker panels, rain gutters, floor pans, and around all windows.
- Pay close attention to automatic transmission fluid. It should be clean and not smell burnt. Check for leaks and ensure smooth shifting during the test drive.
- If looking at a camper, check for signs of past or present water leaks from roof vents, windows, and seals. Test all onboard appliances and electrical systems.
- Suspension components like ball joints, tie rods, and leaf springs wear out, especially on heavily loaded vans. Listen for clunks and check for saggy rear springs.
- The 318 and 360 V8s are durable, but look for common oil leaks from the rear main seal and valve covers.
Prices for Dodge Ram Vans range from $200 for project vehicles to $40,000 for exceptional low-mileage survivors and camper conversions.
