The Fiat 130 was the company's flagship model from 1969 to 1977, an ambitious effort to compete with large German sedans. It featured a sophisticated Aurelio Lampredi-designed V6, four-wheel independent suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes. The initial offering was a soberly styled Berlina (sedan), but the model truly came into its own with the 1971 introduction of the stunning Coupé, designed and built by Pininfarina.
The 130 Coupé is the version collectors seek out. Its sharp, elegant lines are considered a Pininfarina masterpiece and look just as good today as they did in the 70s. The Berlina, by contrast, is far less common and commands significantly lower values. The market for the 130 is relatively thin, but demand for excellent Coupés is strong. Their rarity, Italian V6 character, and high-style design make them a unique alternative to more common German or British classics from the same period.
Buying Tips
- Rust is the primary concern; inspect sills, floor pans, wheel arches, and suspension mounting points thoroughly.
- The Lampredi V6 is durable, but timing belts have a strict service interval. Parts for a rebuild are scarce and expensive.
- Interior trim is almost impossible to find. Pay a premium for a car with a complete and undamaged interior, especially the Coupé's unique velour upholstery and wood trim.
- Check that all complex electrical components work, including power windows, gauges, and air conditioning. Sourcing replacement switches and motors can be a major challenge.
