Ford launched the sixth-generation Explorer for the 2020 model year, marking a significant return to a rear-wheel-drive-based platform. This CD6 architecture, shared with the Lincoln Aviator, improved handling, towing capacity, and overall proportions. Powertrain choices included the standard 2.3L EcoBoost I-4, a 3.0L EcoBoost V6, and for the first time, a hybrid option.
As a modern vehicle, the Explorer's value is in its utility rather than traditional collectibility. It's a capable three-row SUV that appeals to families and those needing space and all-weather capability. The 400-horsepower ST model, however, has attracted enthusiasts seeking a performance-oriented family hauler with surprising acceleration and sharper handling.
The market for these Explorers is driven by depreciation, with early 2020 models now commonly available as off-lease vehicles. Values are heavily influenced by trim level, mileage, and condition. High-performance ST and luxurious Platinum models occupy the top of the market, while XLT and Limited trims represent the majority of transactions.
Buying Tips
- Check for completion of numerous recalls on early 2020-2021 models, which addressed issues with axles, driveshafts, and software.
- Test the 10-speed automatic transmission for harsh shifting or hesitation, which could sometimes be resolved with software updates.
- Verify the SYNC 3 infotainment system is responsive and that features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect properly.
- On ST models, inspect for premature tire and brake wear, which can indicate a history of aggressive driving.
Prices based on recent sales range from $100 to $42,100, with trim, year, and condition creating significant variance.
