Buying Tips
- Rust is the primary concern. Thoroughly inspect the floor pans, trunk floor, inner and outer rocker panels, and the body mounts. Check the bottom of the fenders and quarter panels, especially around the wheel wells.
- The extensive chrome and stainless trim is a key part of the car's look and can be very expensive to replace. Inventory all the trim pieces, including the 'Fairlane stripe,' and check for dings, pitting, or missing sections.
- For Crown Victoria Skyliner models, inspect the acrylic top for cracks, crazing, and yellowing. These panels are difficult and costly to replace.
- The Y-block V8 has a known issue with its top-end oiling system. Listen for excessive valvetrain clatter on startup and when warm, which can indicate oil starvation to the rocker shafts.
- Body styles carry huge value differences. Convertibles and Crown Victorias command the highest prices, while 4-door Town Sedans and 2-door Club Sedans are the most affordable. Be aware of these differences when assessing value.
