With an average sale price around $20,000, the market has a huge spread. The low end consists of high-mileage 2-wheel drive gas models used for commercial work. The high end is dominated by pristine, low-mileage Power Stroke trucks in top trims or specialized examples like highly modified SEMA builds, which explains transactions reaching over $200,000.
Buying Tips
- Check for rust on the frame, bed crossmembers, rocker panels, and cab corners, especially on trucks from the rust belt.
- On early 2011 6.7L Power Stroke models, ask about the turbo. The original Garrett GT32 SST had ceramic ball bearings that could fail; many were replaced with the updated GT37 with steel bearings.
- Inspect the front end for signs of 'death wobble'. Worn ball joints, tie rod ends, or track bar bushings can cause violent shaking after hitting a bump.
- The 6R140 transmission is stout, but it's still important to check for clean fluid and smooth shifts. A history of heavy towing without proper maintenance can cause wear.
- Look for signs of deleted emissions equipment on diesel models. While common, it can create registration issues in some states and may indicate the truck was driven hard.
