Jaguar Mark I

The Jaguar 2.4 and 3.4 Litre Saloons, retroactively known as the Mark I, debuted in 1955 as the brand's first compact saloon. It was also Jaguar's first car to use a modern unitary construction body and chassis. Initially offered with a 2.4-liter version of the legendary XK inline-6 engine, a more potent 3.4-liter option was added in 1957, transforming the car's performance and making it a touring car racing champion.

The Mark I offers the classic 'Grace, Space, Pace' experience that defined 1950s Jaguars but is often overshadowed by its more famous successor, the Mark II. This makes it an interesting proposition for collectors. Its elegant lines, wood-and-leather interior, and connection to motorsport history provide significant appeal without the high entry cost of other classic Jaguars from the period.

Today's market for the Mark I is relatively small but accessible, with an average price just under $15,000. It's an affordable entry point for a 1950s saloon with a racing pedigree. The 3.4-liter models, especially those with the manual overdrive gearbox, are the most sought-after and command the highest prices, while 2.4-liter cars can be found for much less.

Recent sales show a range from about $4,000 for projects to over $27,500 for excellent, well-sorted examples.
