Land Rover Range Rover P38A

The Range Rover P38A, launched in 1994, replaced the iconic Range Rover Classic. It was a major step forward, introducing a more modern design, an updated interior, and new technology like height-adjustable electronic air suspension (EAS). Developed under BMW's ownership, it used updated versions of the Rover V8 in 4.0L and 4.6L displacements, along with a 2.5L BMW diesel engine for other markets.

For years, the P38A was seen as an over-complicated and unreliable used SUV, which kept values depressed. That reputation is changing as enthusiasts appreciate its blend of classic Range Rover capability and modern luxury. It's more comfortable and refined than its predecessor but retains a distinctly analog feel compared to its L322 successor. Special editions like the Callaway-tuned 4.6 HSE, Vitesse, and Holland & Holland are particularly sought after by collectors.

The market for the P38A is showing signs of life after years at the bottom of its depreciation curve. With an average sale price around $15,000, excellent examples are still affordable. However, the best low-mileage survivors and rare editions can bring over $50,000, while neglected projects can be had for just a few hundred dollars, reflecting the high cost of deferred maintenance.

Prices have a wide spread, ranging from $410 for project vehicles to $80,538 for concours-quality and special edition examples.
