Mercedes-Benz A-Class

Mercedes-Benz introduced the A-Class in 1997 as a unique, front-wheel drive compact MPV with an innovative 'sandwich' floor design. It gained early notoriety for failing a Swedish 'moose test', which prompted Mercedes to add Electronic Stability Control (ESP) as a standard feature across its lineup. The car was a practical city vehicle for its first two generations, but the big shift came in 2012 with the third-generation W176. It was redesigned as a conventional, sporty hatchback to compete directly with the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series.

Enthusiasts gravitate toward the third and fourth-generation models, specifically the AMG versions. The A45 AMG was a landmark hot hatch, packing a powerful 2.0L turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive that set new performance standards. Subsequent models, including the A35 and the even more potent A45 S, have built on this legacy. These cars combine blistering performance with premium interiors and technology, making them highly desirable.

The A-Class market is distinctly divided. The wide sales range reflects the difference between early, utilitarian models and recent performance variants. The first two generations (W168, W169) are affordable used cars, often selling for under $10,000. Values rise sharply for the W176 and W177 generations, with low-mileage AMG models commanding the highest prices and representing the modern collectible segment of the A-Class lineup.
