Mercedes-Benz R-Class Submodels

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class was a unique attempt to blend the attributes of a minivan, SUV, and wagon into a single luxury vehicle marketed as a 'Grand Sports Tourer.' Built on a stretched M-Class platform, it offered 3-row seating and standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive in the U.S. market. Despite its practicality and comfort, the R-Class never found a large audience and was discontinued in the U.S. after the 2012 model year.

The collector focus is almost exclusively on the R63 AMG. Produced for just the 2007 model year, it's an incredibly rare beast, with fewer than 100 believed to have been sold in North America. Its hand-built 6.2L M156 V8 produced 503 horsepower, making it one of the fastest and most unusual family haulers ever built. This rarity and outrageous performance give it a dedicated cult following.

Today's market is split. Standard R350 gasoline and R320/R350 Bluetec diesel models are highly affordable, often trading below $20,000, making them practical and luxurious used vehicles. The R63 AMG, however, exists in a completely different market, with prices consistently exceeding $40,000 and the best examples reaching over $60,000.

Buying Tips

  • Airmatic suspension is a common failure point; check for sagging corners or a constantly running compressor, as repairs are expensive.
  • The R63 AMG's M156 V8 engine can have issues with head bolts and camshafts. Insist on detailed service records showing these have been addressed.
  • On Bluetec diesel models, oil cooler leaks are a known issue and a labor-intensive job. Also, check for problems with the emissions control systems.
  • Test all interior electronics. Water leaks from the panoramic sunroof drains can damage control modules located in the cargo area and under the seats.
  • The 7G-Tronic transmission requires fluid and filter changes every 40,000 miles. A jerky transmission could signal neglect and upcoming repair bills.

Prices range from $530 for projects to $64,500 for pristine R63 AMG examples.
