- M272 V6 engines (SLK 280/350) built before 2007 can suffer from premature balance shaft gear wear, a very expensive repair. Check service records to see if the work has been performed.
- The 7G-Tronic automatic transmission can develop faults with its conductor plate, leading to harsh shifts or getting stuck in gear. Ensure the transmission shifts cleanly in all modes.
- On SLK 55 AMG models, listen for excessive valvetrain noise and check for oil leaks from the valve cover gaskets, which are common.
