The Nissan 350Z (Z33) brought the iconic Z-car back to the US market in 2003 after a 7-year absence. It was a back-to-basics sports car, featuring a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter VQ35 V6. Initial models produced 287 hp, but the engine was updated for 2007-2008 to the VQ35HR, which revved higher and made 306 hp.

Collectors prize the 350Z for its analog driving feel, reliable performance, and massive aftermarket support. It's one of the last affordable, traditional Japanese sports cars. The most desirable versions are the later 2007-2008 models with the HR engine, and especially the limited-production Nismo editions, which featured factory aero and suspension upgrades.

The market for the 350Z is broad. Heavily modified and high-mileage examples can be found for less than $10,000, making them accessible project cars. At the other end, factory-stock, low-mileage cars, particularly Nismo models, have seen significant appreciation, with the best examples selling for over $40,000. This wide spread reflects the car's dual role as both a tuner favorite and an emerging collectible.

Buying Tips

  • Check for excessive oil consumption on 2003-2006 models with the VQ35DE engine. The updated VQ35HR in 2007-2008 cars is generally more robust.
  • Inspect the rear tires for uneven wear, which often points to worn suspension bushings, a common and potentially costly issue.
  • Window motor failure is frequent. Test both windows to ensure they go up and down smoothly without stopping.
  • On manual cars, listen for grinding when shifting into 3rd or 5th gear, as synchro wear is a known problem with the 6-speed transmission.
  • Examine the interior plastics, especially on the center stack and door pulls, as they scratch and wear very easily.

Prices range from $1,503 for high-mileage examples to $41,500 for pristine, low-mileage Nismo variants.
