Introduced in 1962, the Norton Atlas was created primarily for the American market's thirst for more power. Its 745cc parallel-twin engine was a stroked version of the 650cc Dominator twin, fitted into Norton's legendary Featherbed frame. The combination produced good performance for the era but was also known for intense vibration at higher engine speeds, a characteristic that defined the bike's personality.
The Atlas is a collectible bridge between the classic Dominator and the later Commando, which used the same engine with an innovative isolastic mounting system. Enthusiasts appreciate the Atlas for its raw, mechanical feel and its quintessential British cafe racer looks. It represents the last and most powerful of the Featherbed-framed Norton twins.
Buying Tips
- Check the Featherbed frame carefully for cracks, especially around the headstock and engine mounts. The 750cc engine's vibration was notorious for causing stress fractures.
- Listen for excessive mechanical noise from the top end. Oil starvation and wear can be issues. Ask about the oil pump and if it's been upgraded.
- Examine for oil leaks. While some weeping is expected, significant leaks from the primary chaincase, cylinder base, or pushrod tubes can signal expensive repairs.
- Verify engine and frame numbers. Many bikes were modified or built from parts. Original, matching-number examples command a premium.
- Inspect the electrical system. Original Lucas components are often troublesome. Many owners upgrade to modern solid-state regulators and electronic ignition for reliability.
