Renault Clio 2nd Gen

The second-generation Renault Clio, launched in 1998, cemented the model's reputation for building brilliant small cars. While the standard Clio was a sales success, it's the high-performance versions from Renault Sport that attract collectors. The front-wheel drive Clio RS 172 and 182 were praised for their sharp chassis and rev-happy 2.0L engines, representing a golden era of analog hot hatches. The lineup's icon, however, is the Clio V6. Inspired by the Renault 5 Turbo, it featured a 3.0L V6 engine mounted in the place of the rear seats, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual.

The Clio V6 is the main driver of the market. Its wild, widebody styling, extreme mid-engine layout, and challenging reputation make it a truly special machine. Phase 1 cars were built by TWR and are known for their raw, demanding handling. Phase 2 cars, built in-house at Renault's Dieppe factory, received a power bump to 255 hp and a revised chassis that made them more stable and exploitable. Rarity and the sheer audacity of the project ensure the V6's place as a modern classic. The much more accessible RS 172 and 182 are also appreciating as enthusiasts seek out engaging, lightweight driver's cars.

Today, the Clio II market is clearly split. The vast majority of sales data is for the desirable Renault Sport models. The Clio V6 sits at the top, with low-mileage Phase 2 examples fetching six-figure prices and showing consistent appreciation. Phase 1 cars are less expensive but are also climbing in value. The Clio RS 172 and 182 remain affordable entry points into the world of French hot hatches, but their values are firming up as good examples become harder to find.

Prices range from under $3,000 for base models to over $120,000 for collector-grade Clio V6 variants.
