The Renault Megane RS, based on the second-generation Megane, debuted in 2004 and immediately became a class leader in the hot hatch segment. Powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged F4Rt engine producing 222 hp, it was Renaultsport's answer to the Golf GTI. The car was celebrated for its exceptional chassis dynamics and precise steering, even if its controversial 'bustle-back' styling wasn't for everyone.

Collectors prize the Megane RS for its pure, focused driving experience. The most desirable versions feature the optional Cup chassis, which added stiffer suspension for track work. Later special editions like the Megane RS 230 Renault F1 Team R26 introduced a standard limited-slip differential, making it even more capable. The ultimate collector's piece is the R26.R from 2008, a stripped-out, lightweight special with a roll cage, carbon hood, and polycarbonate windows that set a Nürburgring record for front-wheel-drive cars.

The market for the Megane RS is heavily dependent on the specific model and its condition. Standard, early cars represent an affordable entry into Renaultsport ownership, while the rare R26 and ultra-rare R26.R variants command significant premiums. With an average sale price around $27,000, the market reflects a mix of standard models and more sought-after specials, where provenance and low mileage drive top values.

Buying Tips

  • The cambelt and dephaser pulley service is crucial. It's due every 72,000 miles or 5 years and is an expensive job, so check for receipts.
  • Listen for knocking from the front suspension. The swivel hub bearings are a known failure point and are costly to replace.
  • Test the 6-speed manual gearbox thoroughly. Worn synchros, especially on 3rd gear, can be a sign of hard use.
  • Check all electronics, particularly the keycard system and electric window regulators, as both are common and frustrating failure points.
  • Verify the car's specification. Many standard cars are fitted with Cup-style wheels, so confirm if it has the actual Cup chassis. For R26 or R26.R models, provenance is key.

Prices for the Megane RS range from approximately $7,500 for project cars to over $52,000 for pristine, low-mileage special editions.
