The Shelby GT350 began in 1965 as a homologation special, turning Ford's Mustang Fastback into a track-ready weapon for SCCA racing. Carroll Shelby's team installed a modified 289 K-Code V8 making 306 horsepower, upgraded the suspension, and removed the rear seat to qualify it as a two-seater sports car. The first-year 1965 models, available only in Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue stripes, are the purest and most sought-after examples, especially the 34 purpose-built R-Models.
