The first-generation Subaru Impreza, specifically the GC8 chassis, is an icon of 90s rally racing. While the world enjoyed turbocharged WRX and STi models, the United States' hero car was the 2.5RS. Launched for the 1998 model year, the 2.5RS combined the aggressive styling of the turbo models—complete with a hood scoop, vents, and a large wing—with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer engine and all-wheel drive. What was once an inexpensive used car is now a recognized collectible, particularly for enthusiasts who grew up driving them in video games like Gran Turismo. The average sale price of over $14,000 reflects the demand for well-kept survivors. While project cars remain affordable, pristine, low-mileage coupes command prices that rival their turbocharged JDM counterparts.
