The first-generation Suzuki Jimny began in 1970 as the LJ10, a tiny kei-class 4x4 powered by a 359cc two-stroke engine. Suzuki had purchased the design from the Hope Motor Company and refined it, creating a new market for a lightweight, capable off-roader. Over its 11-year run, the series evolved through the LJ20, the three-cylinder LJ50, and finally the four-stroke, 797cc LJ80, which was more suitable for export markets and is the most common version found today.
Collectors appreciate the first-gen Jimny for its historical importance and its pure, minimalist design. It's the origin point for a lineage that continues to be successful over 50 years later. Buying Tips
- Rust is the biggest enemy. Thoroughly inspect the frame rails, body mounts, floor pans, and the area around the windshield frame and door sills.
- Differentiate between the engine types. Early models use two-stroke engines that require oil to be mixed with the fuel, while the later LJ80 has a more conventional four-stroke four-cylinder that's easier to maintain.
- Test the 4WD system completely. Engage and disengage both high and low ranges to ensure the transfer case and locking hubs function correctly. Vacuum-operated components can be a source of problems.
- Parts availability is a challenge. While some mechanical parts are shared or available, body panels, interior trim, and specific glass are very difficult to find. Prioritize buying the most complete and solid example you can afford.
