Suzuki RE5

Suzuki bet big on rotary power in the 1970s, and the RE5 was the result. Launched for the 1975 model year, it featured a complex 497cc single-rotor Wankel engine intended to provide turbine-like smoothness. The bike was heavy, hot, and thirsty, and its ambitious engineering failed to win over buyers, leading to its discontinuation after just two years.

The RE5's commercial failure is central to its appeal as a collector's item. Its engineering is a fascinating dead-end in motorcycle history. The initial 1975 'M' model, with its unique cylindrical instrument pod and taillight designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, is the most sought-after version. For 1976, the 'A' model used more conventional gauges and lights from the Suzuki GT750 to cut costs, making it slightly less desirable today.

The market for the RE5 is small but consistent, with well-sorted examples selling for under $10,000. It's an affordable entry into rotary vehicle ownership, but mechanical complexity is a major factor. Running bikes carry a significant premium over non-running projects, as parts and mechanical expertise are incredibly rare. The 1975 'M' model typically commands the highest prices.
