Toyota 4Runner 1st Gen

The first-generation 4Runner arrived in 1984 as a clever adaptation of Toyota's famously tough Hilux pickup. Instead of a separate bed, it featured a one-piece body with a removable fiberglass shell, two extra seats, and an interior that was a step up from its utilitarian sibling. The most significant change during its run came in 1986, when the rugged solid front axle, prized by off-roaders, was replaced by a more comfortable independent front suspension (IFS). A 3.0L V6 was added as an option to the venerable 2.4L 22R-E inline-4 in 1988.

Collectors are drawn to the 1st Gen's simple mechanicals, iconic 1980s styling, and go-anywhere capability. The removable top offers a unique open-air experience that later generations lost. The 1984-1985 solid-axle models are particularly sought after by off-road enthusiasts for their durability and ease of modification. SR5 trim packages, with their signature graphics, striped seats, and extra gauges, are the most desirable among collectors.

The market for these 4Runners is strong and reflects the growing appreciation for vintage Japanese 4x4s. While project trucks can be found for a few thousand dollars, low-mileage, original examples have seen their values climb significantly. The average sale price sits around $17,000, but exceptional trucks, especially well-preserved SR5 models from 1985, can sell for over $40,000.
