Toyota Celica 1st Gen

The first-generation Toyota Celica debuted in late 1970 as Japan's answer to the American pony car. Its stylish coupe and later liftback bodies, reminiscent of the Ford Mustang, earned it a popular following. Early cars came in ST and GT trims, with the GT offering a 5-speed manual, sportier trim, and a more powerful twin-cam engine in some markets.

Collectors are drawn to the Celica's classic 70s design, simple mechanicals, and legendary Toyota reliability. It represents a key moment in Japanese automotive history when manufacturers began to challenge western brands with desirable, fun-to-drive cars. The Liftback models, especially the GT, are the most sought-after for their fastback styling and better standard equipment.

The market for these cars is well-established, with 42 sales averaging over $20,000. While affordable projects can still be found for under $5,000, exceptional, restored examples, particularly the 1976-1977 GT Liftbacks, can sell for more than $60,000. Values have been climbing steadily as appreciation for vintage Japanese cars grows.
