Vanderhall, based in Utah, introduced the Carmel as a more refined version of its three-wheeled autocycle. Unlike the more spartan Venice, the Carmel features front-hinged doors, a removable roof panel, and a heater, making it more usable in various conditions. It's powered by a GM-sourced 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with an automatic transmission.
Enthusiasts are drawn to the Carmel's unique driving experience, which blends vintage aesthetics with modern performance. It offers a distinct alternative to vehicles like the Polaris Slingshot or Morgan 3-Wheeler, providing more comfort and convenience. Its hand-built nature and American origin add to its appeal for those seeking something different.
Buying Tips
- Check the condition of the single rear tire, as its wear can indicate how hard the vehicle was driven.
- Inspect the composite body panels for stress cracks, especially around mounting points and door hinges.
- Verify that all electronics, including the push-button shifter and gauges, function correctly.
- Test the removable roof to ensure it seals properly and doesn't create excessive wind noise at speed.
- Confirm your state's licensing and insurance requirements for autocycles, as they can differ from those for cars or motorcycles.
