The Volkswagen Jetta began in 1979 as a sedan counterpart to the popular Golf, offering buyers the same engineering with the practicality of a traditional trunk. Across seven generations, it evolved from a simple econobox into a more refined compact sedan, often with a premium feel compared to its hatchback sibling. It's a car that has served millions as daily transport, but specific models have always attracted an enthusiastic following.

Collectors primarily seek out the first two generations, especially in sport-oriented GLI trim. These cars share their agile chassis and rev-happy engines, like the 1.8L 16V, with the GTI. Their lightweight, simple construction and boxy Giugiaro styling make them icons of the 1980s. The Mk3 Jetta's introduction of the smooth, torque-rich VR6 engine created another enthusiast niche, prized for its unique six-cylinder soundtrack.

The Jetta market is incredibly diverse. The average sale price of $10,150 is heavily skewed by pristine collector models and newer, low-mileage used cars. The vast majority of the 164 recent sales were for well under $10,000, with many older examples trading as simple, inexpensive transportation. The high end of the market is reserved for exceptionally clean, low-mileage Mk1 and Mk2 GLI models or rare editions.

Prices range from $270 for project cars to $45,000 for pristine collector examples and newer models.
