Willys Americar Coupe

The Willys Americar was introduced in 1941 as an update to the outgoing Model 77. It was an economical car with a 4-cylinder engine, but its time was cut short by America's entry into World War II. The coupe's lightweight body and accommodating engine bay, however, gave it a second life it never could have anticipated.

After the war, drag racers discovered the Willys coupe was a perfect foundation for a 'gasser.' Its short wheelbase and light weight made it ideal for stuffing a big V8 under the hood. This hot-rodding legacy is the primary reason collectors seek them out today. Very few stock, original examples survive; the vast majority are either period-correct gassers or modernized street rods.

The market for Willys coupes is defined by the quality and style of the build. Unrestored shells or rough projects can be acquired for under $10,000, but professionally built, show-winning street rods regularly sell for over $80,000. An average sale price around $50,000 reflects the cost of a well-executed, drivable car that's ready to enjoy.
