Acura RL 2nd Gen

The second-generation Acura RL (KB1) arrived for 2005 with a headline feature: Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). This system could actively vector torque between the rear wheels, a sophisticated trick that gave the unassuming luxury sedan impressive handling. Power came from a 3.5L V6 making 300 hp (later rated at 290 hp). A 2009 update (KB2) brought a larger 3.7L V6, a revised transmission, and the controversial "power plenum" grille design.

The RL was always an underdog, competing against the established German players with advanced technology rather than brand prestige. Its conservative styling and FWD-based platform meant it was often overlooked when new. For today's buyers, this translates into a tremendous value. It's a reliable and comfortable sedan packed with features that were advanced for the mid-2000s, making it an excellent modern classic or a capable daily driver.

The market for the RL is still very much in used-car territory, with an average price around $8,200. The wide spread in values reflects condition and mileage more than specific options. The later 2009-2012 models are often preferred for their larger engine and updated infotainment, but pristine examples of any year can command a premium.

Recent sales have ranged from project car money to $23,000 for pristine, low-mileage examples.
