The Audi S2 arrived in 1991 as the spiritual successor to the legendary Ur-Quattro. Based on the B4-generation Audi 80, it paired a new 2.2-liter 20-valve turbocharged inline-5 engine with the brand's signature quattro all-wheel drive system. Early cars used the 3B engine with 220 PS and a 5-speed manual, while later models from 1993 received the ABY engine with 230 PS and a 6-speed gearbox. Available as a Coupe, Avant, and a very limited Sedan, the S2 set the template for all future Audi S models.
Buying Tips
- The 2.2L 20V engine is stout, but check for a complete service history, especially for the timing belt and water pump. Oil leaks from the valve cover gasket are common.
- Inspect the galvanized body carefully for rust in the wheel arches and sills, particularly on cars from wet climates. Check for poor accident repairs by examining panel gaps.
- Test all interior electronics. The digital trip computer, automatic climate control, and instrument cluster can develop faults that are difficult and expensive to fix due to rare parts.
- The quattro drivetrain is tough, but listen for clicking from the CV joints during tight turns. The later 6-speed manual (ABY engine) is more desirable than the earlier 5-speed (3B engine).
- Stock suspension bushings are almost certainly worn. Upgraded suspension is common, but check for quality components. Early cars had 'UFO' front brakes that are hard to service; many have been upgraded to Porsche or G60 calipers.
