BMW E81/E82/E88 1 Series

The first-generation BMW 1 Series, particularly the E82 coupe and E88 convertible, was a return to the brand's roots. It offered a compact, rear-wheel-drive platform reminiscent of the classic 2002, but with modern power and safety. Arriving in the U.S. for the 2008 model year, buyers could choose between the balanced 128i with its naturally aspirated N52 inline-6 or the powerful 135i, which featured the twin-turbocharged N54 engine, later replaced by the single-turbo N55.

The 1 Series' collectibility is centered on its top performance models. The limited-production 1 Series M Coupe is the halo car, using a tuned N54 engine, M3 suspension components, and aggressive widebody styling. With only 740 units sold in the U.S., it's a guaranteed modern classic. The 135i is also highly desirable, especially models with the N54 engine, which is famous for its massive tuning potential. Manual transmission cars with the M Sport package are the most sought-after by enthusiasts.

The market for the 1 Series is broad. The 1M commands the highest values, often trading for well over its original sticker price. Well-maintained 135i models are appreciating, especially with desirable options and low mileage. The 128i remains an accessible and reliable entry point, offering the same fantastic chassis dynamics for a fraction of the price. With an average sale price around $16,000, there's a 1 Series for many budgets.

Prices range from under $10,000 for daily-driven examples to $95,000 for top-spec 1 Series M Coupe variants.
