BMW M1

The BMW M1 was born from a desire to beat Porsche in Group 4 and 5 racing. BMW initially partnered with Lamborghini to engineer and build the homologation cars, but financial troubles at the Italian firm led to a chaotic production process involving multiple companies. In the end, only about 453 cars were completed, including race cars. The M1 features a Giugiaro-designed fiberglass body over a spaceframe chassis and is powered by the legendary M88 3.5-liter inline-6, a 24-valve, dry-sump engine that would form the basis for future M-car powerplants.

The M1 is a cornerstone of any serious BMW collection. It's the first official M-badged car and the company's only true mid-engine supercar.
