BMW Z1

The BMW Z1 was the first project from BMW's advanced engineering unit, BMW Technik GmbH. Its most famous feature is its unique vertically retracting doors, which drop down into the sills. Built on a bespoke chassis with a zinc-dipped frame, it featured removable thermoplastic body panels and the Z-axle multi-link rear suspension, a design later used on other BMWs. Production was limited to just 8,000 units between 1989 and 1991, all left-hand drive.
