The BMW Z4 arrived in 2002 as a successor to the popular Z3, trading soft curves for a controversial flame-surfaced design. Built on the E46 3 Series platform, the first-generation (E85/E86) offered a significantly stiffer chassis and a lineup of smooth inline-6 engines. The lineup was crowned by the Z4 M Roadster and Coupe, which used the 333 hp S54 engine from the E46 M3, creating an instant classic. The second-gen E89 (2009-2016) switched to a folding hardtop and turbocharged engines, becoming more of a comfortable GT car.
