Introduced for the 1983 model year, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer was a compact SUV based on the S-10 pickup truck. It offered a smaller, more fuel-efficient alternative to the full-size K5 Blazer and quickly became a massive sales success. Early models came with a pokey 2.0L inline-4, but the lineup soon expanded to include a 2.8L V6 and, most importantly, the 4.3L V6 in 1988. - Rust is the biggest enemy. Check the rocker panels, lower fenders, cab corners, and around the rear wheel wells and tailgate.
- The 4.3L Vortec V6, available from 1988, is the most desirable engine; check for signs of intake manifold gasket leaks.
- Test the 4WD system thoroughly. The vacuum-actuated front axle engagement can be problematic, and repairs can be tricky.
- Interior plastics are often brittle and cracked after decades. Finding specific replacement dash pads and trim panels can be difficult and expensive.
