The 6th generation Suburban, sold from 1967 to 1972, is known for its distinctive 'Action Line' styling shared with Chevrolet's C/K pickups. This generation is notable for introducing a unique 3-door configuration, with a single driver's side door and two passenger side doors, improving rear seat access. Available with a wide range of inline-6 and V8 engines, and in both 2WD and 4WD, these Suburbans offered versatility that was unmatched at the time.
Collector interest has grown significantly, riding the wave of popularity for vintage trucks and SUVs. The Suburban's classic good looks, immense practicality, and parts availability make it an attractive classic for enthusiasts who want a vehicle they can use regularly. Its simple mechanicals also make it a popular base for restorations, custom builds, and restomods, particularly the more desirable 4x4 models.
The market for these Suburbans is broad, with an average sale price around $36,000. Project-quality examples can be found for under $10,000, but fully restored and highly modified trucks, especially those with big-block V8s and 4WD, can easily exceed $80,000. Values have been climbing steadily as buyers seek out vintage utility vehicles with style.
Buying Tips
- Rust is the biggest concern. Check the rocker panels, cab corners, floor pans, and the drip rails above the doors.
- Inspect the frame for cracks, especially around the steering box mount on 4x4 models.
- The unique 3rd door can have alignment issues; ensure it opens, closes, and latches properly without sagging.
- Verify the functionality of the 2-piece tailgate. The upper lift glass and its supports can be worn, and the lower gate is a common rust spot.
- Many Suburbans have been modified. Confirm the originality of the engine and drivetrain if you're seeking a factory-spec truck.
Based on recent sales, prices range from $5,900 for projects to $86,000 for top-tier examples.
