The 5th generation Bronco, sold from 1992 to 1996, was the end of an era for Ford's classic 2-door SUV. Based on the contemporary F-150, it gained a more aerodynamic front end and a redesigned interior that included a driver's side airbag for 1994. While it retained its rugged body-on-frame construction and capable 4-wheel-drive systems, this generation added safety and comfort features that made it a better daily vehicle than its predecessors.
Collector interest in these trucks has surged, partly because they were the last of their kind for over 20 years. Their simple, tough construction and classic SUV proportions have a strong appeal. Special editions like the Eddie Bauer, with its two-tone paint and upgraded interior, and the blacked-out Nite package are particularly sought after by enthusiasts.
Buying Tips
- Rust is the biggest enemy. Check the rear wheel arches, radius arm mounts, core support, and especially the bottom of the tailgate, which often rusts from the inside out.
- The E4OD 4-speed automatic transmission can be a weak point. Ensure it shifts smoothly without hesitation or clunking, and check for records of rebuilds or replacement.
- Test the electric tailgate window. The motor is a very common failure point, and replacement can be time-consuming.
- Inspect the removable fiberglass hardtop for cracks, leaks, and worn seals. Ensure the mounting hardware is present and in good condition.
- Look for signs of excessive off-road use, such as dents in the frame, skid plates, and suspension components. While capable, hard use accelerates wear and tear.
